Hello, and welcome to BertMills.com. My focus on this blog is to highlight local businesses and discuss real world examples of networking.
A few months ago, (back in 2009), I was asked to take over a office in Woodinville. I had already built a network in Duvall. Now, I needed to start networking in a new area, and I thought this blog might be a good way to document that adventure. You see, I’m an introvert.
My first job right out of college had me attend a networking event. I was scared stiff. I spent two hours wandering a huge room full of people and I spoke to one person, and that person approached me. I was a disaster. I did learn one thing. If I was going to make it, I needed to learn to overcome my fear and learn to connect with individuals.
Today, when I’m with a group of people, my mind still goes blank and I don’t know what to talk about. I do better with one-to-one conversation; however, groups make me nervous. I’ve learned several tricks to help me face these fears, and they don’t stop me today. I know how to overcome them. I figure if I can successfully network in a completely new area then anyone can start making connections.
Barbie: Fairytopia
This blog will highlight the tips and tricks that I learn; what I see others doing; and my own personal experiences as I begin to meet new people. My daughter Melia has a favorite movie called Fairytopia. It’s a Barbie movie. In the film there is a line that says…for the friends I have and for the friends I haven’t met yet. That is how I view networking. It’s an opportunity to connect with friends that I haven’t met yet.
In addition to networking, I want to highlight good, quality businesses in the area. My hope is to build local connections so you can find the type of business you need when you need it.
Worm Farming
As for me, I live just south of Duvall in unincorporated King county. My neighborhood is a small community around Lake Marcel, where I spend time with my lovely wife and two beautiful daughters. I enjoy bicycling, geocaching, swimming and puttering around in my garden. I’m also an avid worm farmer.
Bert – I found your site through LinkedIn and your Recommendations for the Ovaleye group. I think this is a great idea and your comments are spot on for helping network. I am always trying to make connections for the Museum and this is helpful for me. Keep up the good work and I’ll be back to see your site often.
